MarDon Fresh News – December 28, 2021

MarDon Fresh News – December 28, 2021

The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is 1039.50 feet – rising 0.40 feet this week. The water temperature on the main lake is in the very close to 32 degrees. If we get a calm stretch, the Reservoir will begin to freeze over. We may get an opportunity do some ice fishing this year!

Species to target in the colder water are trout, walleye, and smallmouth bass. Trout fishing remains fair. Troll a #5 or #7 Flicker Shad, or Wedding Rings with worms in front of the Potholes State Park, the face of the sand dunes, and at the mouth of Lind Coulee to Perch Point. Troll in 10 - 30 feet of water. From shore fish Medicare Beach with Berkley PowerBait or marshmallows and worms.

The Walleye bite has been fair this past week. With the colder water temp – it’s a jigging game. Mark your fish – then drop a blade bait, ThinFisher, or fluke style bait down to the marks. Fish the humps on the face of the dunes, the rocks around Goose Island, the mouth of Crab Creek, and up in Lind Coulee. Look for walleye in the 20 - 40-foot range.

Well – we kind of went from needing some colder weather to frozen up pretty quickly! There is still open water along and around the Frenchman’s and Winchester wasteways. The sand dunes are freezing up/frozen over. Currently there is open water at the face of the dunes – but with the current temperatures – it will be frozen soon.

MarDon Fresh News – December 21, 2021

The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is 1039.10 feet – rising 0.40 feet this week. The water temperature on the main lake is in the upper 30s.The fishing will slow down a bit with these water colder water temperatures, but there are still opportunities to catch fish year around on the Potholes Reservoir and the Seep Lakes that are open year around.

The Walleye bite has been decent this past week.

Smallmouth Bass: The Smallmouth bass fishing has been fair this week. Fish for Smallmouth bass along the face of the dam and the rocky area between Goose Island and the dam and the face of the sand dunes. Fish Blade Baits, Missile Baits Ned Bomb, Skirted Heart Throb XL, and 5- 6” Soft swimbaits in 15-30 feet of water.

There are ducks in the area – this past week has been fair and improving a bit. Still a mixed bag of Widgeon, Pintail, Teal, Spoon Bills, and a few more Mallards. It does not appear that we have had a push of Mallards form the north. We are going to warm up slightly for a few days – then the temps are forecast to crash downward in about one week. This could bring the Mallards in.

MarDon Fresh News – December 07, 2021

MarDon Fresh News – December 07, 2021

The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is 1038.25 feet – rising 0.45 feet this

week. The water temperature on the main lake is 44-46 degrees.

Trout fishing has been fair this week. Troll a #5 or #7 Flicker Shad, or Wedding Rings with

worms in front of the Potholes State Park, the face of the sand dunes, and at the mouth of

Lind Coulee to Perch Point. Troll in 10 - 30 feet of water. From shore fish Medicare Beach

with Berkley PowerBait or marshmallows and worms.

Walleye: The Walleye bite continued to be good this past week. With the falling water temp

– it’s a jigging game. Mark your fish – then drop jigs and blade baits down. Fish the humps

on the face of the dunes, the rocks around Goose Island, the mouth of Crab Creek, and up

in Lind Coulee. Cast a Strike King J300D Jerkbait along the face of the dam. Jig a รณ oz.

blade bait or Johnson’s ThinFisher in all the spots mentioned above as well.

Smallmouth Bass: The Smallmouth bass fishing has been fair to good this week. Fish for

Smallmouth bass along the face of the dam and the rocky area between Goose Island and

the dam and the face of the sand dunes. Missile Baits Ned Bomb, Skirted Heart Throb XL

and #7 Rapala shad Raps in 4-25 feet of water. Jerkbaits and swimbaits will pick up bigger

fish this time of year along the face of the dam.

Largemouth Bass: Bass fishing has been tough this week. Fish the face of the sand dunes

– look for steeper drops and work deep diving crankbaits or Skirted hula grubs and jigs

down the slope. Use a blade bait or jigging spoon for deeper fish. Fish in10–30-feet.There

are some good largemouth hanging out on the face of the dam.

Panfish: Fair on the face of the sand dunes. The crappies are becoming more pelagic as

the water cools making it tougher to stay on them, but some are still holding on boxes. Fish

the face of the sand dunes and around the mouth of Crab Creek. Use electronics to mark

the fish and vertically jig or use a slip bobber with a 1/32 oz head and a Baby Shad or DS

Fry. The crappies are there – you just need to find them, and they will bite!

There are ducks in the area – this past week has been good. Still a mixed bag of Widgeon,

Pintail, Teal, Spoon Bills, and a few more Mallards. We have not had a big push from the

north just yet - should be coming soon – huge numbers of Snow Geese have shown up

within thew past several days!
