MarDon Fresh News – June 29, 2018

The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is 1040.17 – just over a foot lower than this time last week.  The water temperature on the main Reservoir is at 69.7 degrees and in the mid 70’s back in the sand dunes.
The Largemouth fishing continues to be very good back in the sand dunes and the stretch between MarDon Resort and the State Park. Top baits include -  Spro Popping Frogs, Wacky Rigged Senkos and Spinnerbaits. Smallmouth are being caught on the rock piles off Goose Island and along the face of the dam. Use crankbaits, 3 ½” tubes, and Senkos for the Smallmouth.

The walleye fishing fair to good. Some fish are starting to move out of the sand dunes to the face of the dunes. Fish the weeds and the drops on the edge of the weeds. Productive spots have been Crab Creek from the mouth to the Power Lines, in front of the State Park, and along the face of the dunes. Fish are being caught trolling Slow Death rigs with Smile Blades and Butterfly Blade rigs as well as traditional spinner/crawler harnesses. Crankbaits and swimbaits have been productive back in the dunes. Fish 10-20 feet of water.

 The trout fishing on the Potholes Reservoir has been very good this past week. Anglers have been catching big trout trolling #5 and # 7 Flicker Shads and Shad Raps in front of the State Park and trolling Mack’s Wedding Ring rigs with a night crawler and bottom bouncer in 12-18 feet of water.

The crappie fishing continues to be very good off the MarDon Resort dock. The Crappie limit is 25 fish per person with a 9” minimum size on the Potholes Reservoir. Reports of crappie being caught back in the dunes are coming in as well. Use a 1” Berkley Gulp Minnow in Black Shad, Smelt, or Luma Glow on a 1/80th -1/32nd ounce jig head or fish the Strike King Electric Shad in the Electric Chicken color. A few perch are being caught off the dock as well as around Goose Island.

The water continues to drop on the Potholes Reservoir - the current water level is 1041.32 - one foot lower than this time last week.  The water temperature on the main Reservoir is at 72 degrees and in the mid 70’s back in the sand dunes.

Both the Largemouth and Smallmouth bass fishing has been very god this past week. Fish the dunes, face of the dam, and the stretch between MarDon Resort and the State Park. Top baits include - Senkos, Chigger Craws - Texas Rigged, Punch Rigs, Jigs, Spinnerbaits and popping frogs have all been productive. Smallmouth are being caught in the sand dunes, on the rock piles off Goose Island and along the face of the dam. Use crankbaits, 3 ½” tubes, and Senkos for the Smallmouth.

The walleye fishing fair to good. Fish the weeds and the drops on the edge of the weeds.  The trout fishing on the Potholes Reservoir has been very good this past week. Several limits of trout in the 18-24” range have come in. Both the Largemouth and Smallmouth bass fishing is excellent right now. Fish the dunes, face of the dam, and the stretch between MarDon Resort and the State Park. Fish the same pattern as last week - Senkos, Chigger Craws - Texas Rigged, Punch Rigs, Jigs, and Spinnerbaits and popping frogs have all been productive. Smallmouth are being caught in the sand dunes, on the rock piles off Goose Island and along the face of the dam. Use crankbaits, 3 ½” tubes, and Senkos for the Smallmouth.

The walleye fishing is good. They remain in and around the weeds. Fish up Crab Creek from the mouth to the Power Lines and the West arm of the sand dunes. Fish are being caught trolling Slow Death rigs with Smile Blades and Butterfly Blade rigs as well as traditional spinner/crawler harnesses. Crankbaits and swimbaits have been productive back in the dunes in 4-15 feet of water. Several limits have been reported.

 Trout are being caught in the Seep Lakes on Power Bait, and or worms and Rooster Tails.  The top lakes have been Soda Lake, Long Lake, and Upper and Lower Hampton Lakes. The trout fishing on the Potholes Reservoir continues to be productive with trout in the 2-5-pound range being caught. Anglers have been catching big fish trolling #5 and # 7 Flicker Shads and Shad Raps in front of the State Park.

The crappie fishing has been excellent off the MarDon Resort dock with limits being caught. Remember – the Crappie limit is 25 fish per person with a 9” limit. Reports of crappie being caught back in the dunes are coming in as well. Use a 1” Berkley Gulp Minnow in Black Shad, Smelt, or Luma Glow on a 1/80th -1/32nd ounce jig head. The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is 1044.26 feet a foot down from last week. The water temperature on the main Reservoir is at 75 degrees and in the mid upper 70’s back in the sand dunes.
The Largemouth fishing continues to be very good. Most Largemouth have finished up their spawning activities. The fish are spreading out a bit – fish the dunes, face of the dam, and the stretch between MarDon Resort and the State Park. Fish the same pattern as last week - Senkos, Chigger Craws - Texas Rigged, Punch Rigs, Jigs, and Spinnerbaits and popping frogs have all been productive.  The smallmouth fishing has picked up this week. Smallmouth are being caught in the sand dunes, on the rock piles off Goose Island and along the face of the dam. Use crankbaits, 3 ½” tubes, and Senkos for the Smallmouth.

The walleye fishing is fair to good. They are setting up in the weeds and on the weed lines up Crab Creek and in the sand dunes. Fish are being caught trolling Slow Death rigs with Smile Blades and Butterfly Blade rigs as well as traditional spinner/crawler harnesses. Crankbaits and swimbaits have been productive back in the dunes in 4-15 feet of water. Fish Lind Coulee, Crab Creek and the sand dunes for the walleye.
