MarDon Fresh News – February 19, 2021

MarDon Fresh News – February 19, 2021

The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is 1042.22 – up .17 feet from last week – and 4.28 feet below full pool. The water temperature on the Potholes Reservoir 32 degrees. Approximately one half of the Potholes Reservoir is frozen over – considering the Lind Coulee Arm, the sand dunes, and the perimeter of the Reservoir. All boat launches are ice bound – but will open up in the next several days. THERE IS NO SAFE ICE yet and it is highly unlikely there will be any ice fishing this season as temperatures are set to rise dramatically starting tomorrow – we will have a high above freezing for the first time in weeks – hitting 55 degrees come Monday! These warmer temperatures will be sure to improve fish activity!

Although fishing opportunities are tough come by currently, you have a great opportunity to see numerous American Bald Eagles. You can spot them sitting on the edge of the ice on the Reservoir, as they sit in the trees between MarDon Resort and the Potholes State Park, and in flight over the Reservoir and in the Seep Lakes! I personally spotted seven Bald Eagles today between Lind Coulee and MarDon Resort!

Once the Reservoir thaws – best bets are to target walleye – start looking for fish in the 35–45-foot depth range. Move around until you start marking fish in an area then vertical jig these fish with a ó ounce blade bait, a Whistle Pig, or 4–5- inch fluke type baits on a 3/8-ounce jig head. Fish the humps in front of the sand dunes, around the mouth of Crab Creek, and around Goose Island.

To target trout - Troll a #7 Flicker Shad 100 feet out the back of the boat. Chrome Clown, Slick Blue Alewife, and Flashy Perch are good bets. Best fishing has been out in front of the Potholes State Park. From shore – fish Medicare Beach with marshmallows and Powerbait 18” off the bottom.

Once the Seep Lake thaw – try Corral Lake and Long Lake. Fish Powerbait or marshmallows and worms about 18 inches off the bottom with an 1/8-1/4 ounce egg sinker.

The MarDon Resort dock - in Winter's grip!  No worries - warmer temperatures on the way!
