MarDon Fresh News – October 16, 2020
It was a rough weekend weather-wise for the anglers fishing the Rod Meseberg “Spring” Walleye Classic – but the anglers stuck it out and caught some quality fish! Congratulations to Brad and Matt Fairbank who weighed 27.12 pounds of walleye to take first place in the two-day event! Kerri Ireland took Big Fish payout by weighing a 9.31-pound walleye!
The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is 1029.90 – down .24 feet from last week. The water temperature on the Potholes Reservoir is 60-64 degrees. Continue to use caution when running between the Goose Island and the face of the dam as well as running the sand dunes – but still a lot of dunes and rocks just below the surface.
The largemouth bass fishing has been very good this week. Anglers are finding fish back in the dunes as well as in deeper spots along the face of the sand dunes and along the face of the dam. Fish topwater baits, jerkbaits, Senkos, Skirted Hula Grubs, jigs, and crankbaits in 2-25 feet of water.
Walleye fishing has been fair this week – wind made it tough for 3-4 days. The walleye are hitting both worms on a bottom bouncer and crankbaits. Troll a worm in 5-15 feet of water behind a 2 oz. bottom bouncer with or without blades at .08 - 1.2 mph. For crankbaits – troll #5 or #7 Flicker Shads in the same depths. There are some fish being caught in deeper water on ½ oz. Blade Baits
Fish the rock piles around Goose Island, the face of the dam and the face of the sand dunes with Senko’s, Hula grubs and drop shot lures for Smallmouth. Crankbaits have been catching fish as well.
Trout fishing did pick up this week. Troll a #7 Flicker Shad 100 feet out the back of the boat. Chrome Clown, Slick Blue Alewife, and Flashy Perch have been producing trout in the 2-5-pound range. Troll at 2-2.5 mph. The Wicked Lures Trout Killer has been producing trout and walleye as well. Best fishing has been out in front of the Potholes State Park. From shore – fish Medicare Beach with marshmallows and Powerbait 18” off the bottom.
Crappie and Bluegill fishing was fair this week this week along the face of the dunes and at the mouth of Crab Creek. Troll a number 5 Flicker Shad or fish Baby Shads, DS Frys and Trout Magnets on a 1/32nd oz. tipped with a maggot vertically jigged or with a slip bobber.
