MarDon Fresh News – July 22, 2021

The current water level on the Potholes Reservoir is at 1031.34 – dropping 1.76 feet over the past week. The water temperature on the main lake is right around the upper 70-degree mark. The water back in the sand dunes is warming to the mid to upper 80s. The temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 90s for the next week or so – so come prepared. Fish early and late! The water is and has been dropping close to 2.00 feet a week for several weeks. Make sure you know the Reservoir before you head back in the sand dunes or between the dam and Goose Island!

A big congratulations to father and son team – Santos and Isaiah Garza for a great first place finish in the Limit Out Marine Potholes Shoot Out! The team weighed 19.34 pounds for five largemouth bass! An awesome second day bag for the win!

Trout: Trout fishing – fair early and late.  Troll a #5 Flicker Shads, Wee-Gee spoon, or a Wedding Rings with worms in front of the Potholes State Park and at the mouth of Lind Coulee to Perch Point. Troll in 15- 30 feet of water. From shore fish Medicare Beach with Berkley PowerBait or marshmallows and worms. The trout are literally breaking the surface feeding on all the Spring fry! Fish early and late.

Walleye: The Walleye has bite is tough right now. With the water level dropping and the water temperature high – the walleye will move out of the sand dunes and onto the humps on the face of the dunes. Troll #7 Flicker Shads or #7 Rapala Shad over the humps in 15-25 feet of water. Second option – troll a Slow Death/Smile Blade/crawler rig with a 2 oz. bottom walker at the same depth at .8 - 1.0 mph. Fish the humps on the face of the dunes and the rocks around Goose Island.

Smallmouth Bass: The Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be good this week.  Fish for Smallmouth bass along the face of the dam and the rocky area between Goose Island and the dam and the face of the sand dunes. Use a 4” wacky rigged Senko, Missile Baits Ned Bomb, Skirted Heart Throb XL and #7 Rapala shad Raps in 4-25 feet of water depending on the time of day or night.

Largemouth Bass: Bass fishing is good back in the sand dunes and on the face of the sand dunes. Start out frog fishing and then switch to sight fishing with a Senko or light jig as the frog bite drops off. This time of year, a variety of baits will catch bass back. Top baits have been ½ oz. Freedom Flipping Jig with a 4.00” WGT Mobster Craw trailer, swim jigs with a 4.25” Skull Fish, SPRO Poppin’ Frogs, 5” Senko, Z-Man Chatter Baits, Hula Grubs, and Spinnerbaits. Fish 1-15 feet of water.

Panfish: Very good on the face of the sand dunes. Big crappie and bluegill are being caught on the face of the sand dunes. As the temperature rises - the pan fishing will improve.  Troll a #5 Flicker Shad or use electronics to mark the3 fish and vertically jig or use a slip bobber with a 1/32 oz head and a Baby Shad or DS Fry.  Also throw small Mepp’s spinners or Rooster tails through the schools.
